At BWXT in Toronto, we make ceramic pellets from natural uranium dioxide powder.

Our Toronto facility receives natural uranium dioxide powder from Cameco Corporation in Port Hope.

Natural Uranium Dioxide ceramic pellets, made at our BWXT NEC Toronto site.

After pressing, baking, grinding to a precise size and inspection, we send the pellets to our facility in Peterborough. There, they are placed into fuel bundles for CANDU® power stations.

The pellets produced at our Toronto facility go on to provide approximately 25% of Ontario’s electricity!

BWXT employs 40 people in Toronto in manufacturing, engineering, environmental health and safety and several other critical fields.

Our Toronto facility is licensed by Canada’s nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Quick Facts:

  • Fewer than 10 pellets are needed to power the average Canadian household for a year.1
  • Generating the same amount of electricity as one uranium pellet would require 410 litres of oil or 350 cubic metres of natural gas.1
  • Uranium occurs naturally in the Earth’s crust. It is about as common as tin and 500 times more abundant than gold. Traces of natural uranium can be found in all rocks and soils, rivers and oceans, as well as in food and in human tissue.1
