Ongoing Training Through Drills and Exercises

We perform emergency response drills at both our Toronto and Peterborough facilities on a regular basis. 

We also schedule drills with local emergency services and provide them with training that’s relevant to our facilities. This ensures that any public response to an emergency event will be a coordinated one.  

All employees are trained on fire prevention measures, emergency situation responses, emergency evacuation routes and their specific responsibilities.

Public Involvement

In the event of an emergency or during a drill, please keep your distance from the entrance of our facilities to ensure first responders are able to easily access our site. 

There are no credible accident scenarios that require public evacuation or sheltering in place due to a release of radiation from our facilities

Effective Communication

Our communications team also practices its response during drills and exercises to ensure the public is informed. 

We use multiple tools to communicate drills in advance. We do not communicate drill dates or times publicly as that would influence employee response, thereby defeating the purpose of the exercise.  

On the day of a drill, we post information on our website (nec.bwxt.com) and hang a banner on the fence at our facility to ensure the community understands why emergency vehicles are on site.

Comprehensive Emergency Plan

In the unlikely event there is an emergency, BWXT has a comprehensive emergency response plan for each site. These plans are continually updated and shared with local fire and other public health emergency services. 

Like all industrial businesses, our facilities have established emergency prevention programs to minimize the risk of fires and other hazardous events. Each facility also has robust response plans that prescribe the actions to be taken to prevent or minimize potential health and environmental hazards. 

Our site response plans provide guidelines for emergency staff and plant personnel for using sound emergency management practices to fulfill both Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission operating license requirements and industry standards for Emergency Planning.
