Peterborough Summer Emergency Drills
BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada (BWXT NEC) has a long history of safe operations and our number one priority is the health and safety of our employees, members of the public and the environment. Our Peterborough and Toronto facilities are regulated by several regulatory bodies, including the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The nuclear industry is one of the highest regulated industries in the world.
One of the ways BWXT NEC protects the health, safety and security of its employees, members of the public and environment is by ensuring that there is always an up-to-date and effective Emergency Response Plan (ERP) in place. The plan outlines how we will prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies at our facilities. The effectiveness of our ERPs are continuously assessed through regular drills and exercises.
We are currently updating our ERP for the Peterborough facility located at 1160 Monaghan Road, and over the course of the summer, we will be conducting a series of drills followed by a scheduled full-scale exercise witnessed by the CNSC. We are planning for these drills to occur in July through to the end of September and first responders will be on-site each time. We will use fence banners and update our website (nec.bwxt.com) on days when drills are occurring to communicate information. These drills will involve the Peterborough Fire Services and Peterborough County-City Paramedics who will be on site as part of a coordinated effort to ensure effective response in the event of a real emergency.
