BWXT Medical employees work every day to tackle some of the greatest challenges of our lifetime. By developing innovative solutions for diagnostic imaging and radiotherapeutic treatments, our team strives to improve patient outcomes worldwide. But it’s not just inside BWXT facilities that employees support those fighting diseases. Twenty BWXT Medical employees recently participated in Oncidium Foundation’s Tackle Cancer Challenge to raise awareness and money for radiotheranostics in cancer care.
“It is important to raise awareness about cancer diagnostics and care globally, and it was such a great opportunity being able to do that by exercising and moving around,” said Caroline Manto Chagas, a senior development technician.
Participants across the world participated in the challenge to log kilometers and raise money to tackle cancer. Our employees tracked 3,794 kilometers (over 2,357 miles) of physical activity, including running, swimming, biking and other sports, such as lifting weights, ice hockey and dancing.
Their reasons why ranged from getting the word out about nuclear medicine to being affected by cancer personally.
“Cancer has touched my family and friends,” said Senior Quality Assurance Specialist Chris Sterzinger. “I have worked my entire career in nuclear medicine on many products that diagnose and treat cancer, so I feel like I have a close connection to this type of challenge.”
“Cancer research is close to my heart, as several of my immediate family members have fought the disease and gone into remission thanks to advances in modern medicine,” added Darby Groen, an engineer at BWXT Medical. “More research means more access to treatment, more advanced treatments and hopefully, one day, it will mean no more lives lost to the disease.”
Laura Stellato, a quality engineering specialist and recreational marathon runner, used the New York City Marathon to participate in the challenge. “Being active is something I do regardless, so when I read about the challenge, I jumped at the chance to take something I am already doing and apply it to helping support those fighting cancer,” she said. “After working in nuclear medicine for over 17 years, I realize how little is known about these options to those outside the industry. And yet, almost everyone is affected by cancer directly or indirectly and may one day rely on these options. I have personal experience as my dad fought and beat prostate cancer a few years ago.”
The BWXT Medical team finished in the top three companies for kilometers tracked that participated.
