BWXT machinist awarded for contributions to submarine readiness

Entrusted with operating one of the largest machining centers in the nation, one BWXT employee is being recognized for his skills and contributions to the infrastructure that drives our national security forward.

Alex Stricklin, the primary machinist on the newest large vertical turning center, has been given one of five inaugural Workforce Stars Awards by the Naval Submarine League. These awards recognize outstanding young adults who are exemplary contributors to the construction, maintenance or repair of submarines or their industrial infrastructure.

Joining BWXT’s team in Mount Vernon, Indiana in 2016 as a production technician, Alex has acquired new skills, training, and responsibilities over the past eight years, including four months at the Accelerated Training for Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program in Danville, Virginia. He was the first Mount Vernon employee to enter the machining program and earned all the National Institute for Metalworking Skills certifications while pursuing additional certifications before graduating. He also encouraged several other ATDM graduates to join him at BWXT.

In his time at BWXT, Alex has evolved into an innovative leader and has significantly improved efficiency at the site. His efforts have helped reduce overall hours on steam generator components and produce low repair rates on all his operations.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Alex,” said Mount Vernon Director of Operations David Luecke. “His skillful contributions and innovative achievements have directly and positively impacted our production outcomes.”

Alex’s motto is to “never stop growing.” “You should never hold yourself to just a standard,” he said. “I’m always striving to do the next big thing.”

“Alex is a leader and role model at our site,” said Mount Vernon General Manager Nate Foote. “He works tirelessly to improve processes and procedures at BWXT, and his collaborative work with tooling application engineers and CNC programmers to innovate new cutting technology and techniques has been invaluable to the team.”

Alex now serves as a public ambassador for BWXT and ATDM. You can hear more of his story as part of ATDM’s Success Stories here.
