Project Pele
A BWXT-led team is manufacturing and delivering the first advanced microreactor in the U.S. as part of a contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense Strategic Capabilities Office. This BWXT-designed 1-5 MWe transportable microreactor will provide clean, zero-carbon energy, meeting mission-critical power needs. Deployable nuclear reactors are designed to provide resilient, independent power, reducing reliance on fuel shipments and convoys that are vulnerable to attack.
The reactor and fuel will be shipped separately from our Lynchburg facilities, with fueling to occur within the Idaho National Laboratory. Once fueled, the system will undergo a series of demonstration tests to confirm operational performance. Power generated by the reactor will be transferred to load banks that accurately mimic the operational load that a power source would see in actual application. In addition, the system will be tested to prove transportability.
BWXT Advanced Nuclear Reactor (BANR)
BANR is a 50 MW modular, factory-fabricated system designed to provide on-site, resilient, carbon-free energy at a fixed cost. The modular design enables rapid deployment in modules sized to ship in containers meeting standard road and rail shipping requirements. It employs mature, high MRL (manufacturing readiness level) high-temperature gas reactor technology, much of which was born from our Pele microreactor prototype design, with enhanced safety features including passive cooling and TRISO fuel. It is designed for flexible power applications to produce carbon-free heat, electricity or cogeneration (mix of both) to supply steam for process heat.
