Subject: Water effluent release at Peterborough Facility, 1160 Monaghan Road
On Saturday, April 5, at approximately 4:00 p.m., BWXT NEC employees discovered water leaking in a floor trench at the facility. The water source was from the beryllium water treatment system and was caused by a failed sump pump at the effluent treatment system discharge. This water was intended for discharge to the sanitary sewer and was instead overflowing into the floor trench and seeping through concrete into the ground under Building 21.
At BWXT NEC we measure this water discharge for beryllium routinely and compare to our internal control level. This effluent source is routinely below standards set internationally for beryllium in drinking water. A sample was taken immediately following the release on April 5 and confirms beryllium concentration in the water was well below our internal control level and international drinking water standards.
The sump pump was inspected and repaired. All relevant authorities have been informed.
