Health and Safety
Employee safety is tremendously important to us. Finishing each and every day incident and injury-free is our ultimate goal. In pursuit of an injury-free workplace, we constantly monitor and assess all injuries and “near misses” for any lessons we can learn - we then leverage these lessons to reduce the risk inherent in our occupational activities. We believe that all occupational and environmental incidents can be prevented, and we have an established safety program to help us achieve our safety goals.
Our recent and historical performance in safety performance measurements consistently ranks us in the top 25% of our peers according to published U.S. Department of Labor statistics. Since 2010, we decreased our Total Recordable Case Rate (TRCR) by 42% and lowered our days away from work, days of restricted work activity, or job transfer (DART) rate by 36%. Several work locations across our company have demonstrated that an injury-free workplace is achievable and sustainable.
BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) has established a Safety Culture Program Policy which specifies ten safety culture traits, and we periodically survey employees on their performance relative to those traits. In addition to surveys, employees participate in small-group sessions to develop action plans to address areas of concern and to improve the safety culture at our locations.
Improvement goals are established and monitored by employees and site leadership. An integral part of our Safety Culture is our Safety Conscious Work Environment; we foster an open culture that encourages personnel to raise issues that are important to them, and we craft resolutions with an eye toward commitment, respect and timeliness. Situations that may pose an environmental, health or safety hazard must be reported immediately.
Diversity
BWXT actively participates in industry groups such as “Women in Nuclear” (WIN) and the “Science, Engineering, Technology, Production program” (STEP), the latter being a national program that honors and promotes women’s participation in manufacturing.
BWXT participates in career fairs to actively recruit qualified indigenous employee candidates. In 2018, BWXT attended career fairs at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Curve Lake First Nation, Saugeen First Nation, and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.
The diversity of our employees is a key asset. We are committed to providing a professional atmosphere for all employees that promotes productivity and encourages creativity and innovation. We will strive to maintain a diverse workforce where employees are hired, retained, compensated and promoted based on their contribution to the Company and their performance.
Work Environment
We are responsible for maintaining high ethical standards. We work to accomplish that by creating a work environment that recognizes effort, appreciates teamwork and values mutual respect and open communication; fostering a culture that demonstrates care and concern for our employees and colleagues; identifying and preventing misconduct and reporting situations that might impact the ability of employees to act ethically on behalf of the Company; and taking prompt action to correct conduct that is inconsistent with our policies.
Harassment in the workplace is behavior that is unwelcome and offensive to individuals or groups. We will not tolerate actions, comments, inappropriate physical contact, sexual advances or any other conduct that is intimidating or otherwise offensive or hostile in the workplace.
We strive to maintain a work environment free from all types of harassment, and we encourage all employees and others to report any such matters immediately. We provide employees with training on a variety of topics - including harassment and ethics-related topics - as required by regulations.
We strive to provide our employees with fair and competitive compensation and benefits for the local markets in which our work is performed. We establish work schedules to meet our own business’s needs, as well as those of our customers, while complying with applicable laws and/or collective bargaining agreements.
We recognize the rights of our employees to participate in any lawful organization, and we comply with laws pertaining to freedom of association, privacy, and collective bargaining.
