All employees at our Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) facility have successfully returned to the site as of Monday, Oct. 14. Our focus is now on readiness assessment activities to ensure a safe restart of the facility in the coming days.
NFS experienced only minor damage from the flooding but lost electrical and water services due to the devastation of local utilities.
An NFS offsite warehouse was heavily damaged, resulting in some NFS property being carried away by floodwater. These items include empty and clean containers, training equipment and new personal protective equipment. Although some of the containers are marked “fissile radioactive material,” as required by Department of Transportation regulations, they are empty and clean. NFS is working with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency to locate and return the property. None of the items pose a risk to the public or the environment.
BWXT, the parent company of NFS, announced a $100,000 donation to the Unicoi County United Way to support the relief efforts underway in the Erwin community. The contribution will directly support emergency response teams on the ground, helping to provide essential supplies, medical aid, shelter and long-term recovery services to those affected by this historical and devastating event.
