The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE: BWC) today hosted a heat exchanger tube sheet laser welding demonstration, sponsored by the Edison Welding Institute (EWI) Nuclear Fabrication Consortium, at the B&W Research Center in Barberton, Ohio. The technology and processes demonstrated could prove beneficial to the nuclear manufacturing industry and supply chain by decreasing the time required to perform heat exchanger welds while reducing negative effects such as tube distortion and heat-affected zones created by traditional welding techniques.

Experts from B&W, EWI's Nuclear Fabrication Consortium and the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy conducted the session under the High Productivity Welding and Machining Demonstration project funded by the DOE. Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Operations Group Inc.'s (B&W NOG) Barberton facility fabricated the model that was used in the demonstration portion of the program.

Event attendees included U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Deputy Director of LWR Technology Tom Miller, EPRI Welding and Repair Technology Center Chairman Dan Patten, other representatives from EPRI and Idaho National Laboratory, B&W and EWI welding experts as well as other industry representatives.
