BWXT Expands Scope of ASME Certification

06 April 2023

(LYNCHBURG, Va. – April 6, 2023) – BWXT Advanced Technologies LLC, a division of BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT), has expanded the scope of its ASME N-Type Certificate of Authorization, which symbolizes the highest levels of quality in the nuclear industry. The ASME nuclear component certificate now includes high temperature reactor design per ASME Section III requirements and the capability to conduct work at its new BWXT Innovation Campus location near Lynchburg, Virginia.

BWXT Advanced Technologies completed the thorough application and recertification process as it is continuing work on a high temperature gas reactor (HTGR) design for the Department of Defense’s Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) Project Pele and readying for other potential nuclear reactor design projects.

“BWXT has a long history of high-quality nuclear design expertise and construction experience, and the expansion of our certification demonstrates not just the rigor of our processes, but also the commitment of our staff to ensuring that our designs meet the exacting standards of the ASME Section III and N Stamp requirements and the growing scope of the industry,” said Joe Miller, BWXT Advanced Technologies president.

“ASME certification for the nuclear and non-nuclear industries is considered by many to be the internationally recognized ‘gold standard’ of certification and accreditation programs,” said ASME Director of Auditing & Inspection Michael Frediani. “With over 100 years of experience certifying manufacturers and accrediting other companies, ASME develops codes and standards as a framework for success to manufacturers striving to design and build the highest quality and safe products for society’s benefit.”

In addition to BWXT Advanced Technologies, BWXT’s Commercial Operations organization holds multiple ASME Certificates of Authorization associated with its work to design, fabricate, manufacture, assemble and construct various nuclear power plant components for North American and other international utilities.

ASME helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real world challenges. Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world.
